Federal and state laws define what school districts must provide to students who need special education. There are two main components — IDEA and Section 504.
IDEA
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act covers students whose disability is determined to adversely affect academic performance. These students may require a modified curriculum.
Section 504
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act covers students who have a substantial limitation in one or more life activity. These students follow the general education curriculum but may require accommodations.

The Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA) offers Special Education Advocate Training (SEAT) courses, webinars, and learning paths for parents, advocates, and attorneys.
